RBC Sports Day in Canada in Langley – Nov 21st, 2015

The RBC Sports Day in Canada is a free annual National event that is aimed at celebrating the power of sport to the community. Events occurred all across Canada and typically provide a ‘Try-It’ opportunity for various sports and activities. This is an excellent event for children, youth, and adults to be introduced to new sports and activities, try them out, learn from the people that teach or coach them on a regular basis with the goal of having people engage in more opportunities to be active and healthy.

This year we participated in the event at the Langley Events Centre in Langley. The organizers did a great job showcasing multiple environments by having activities on both the ice rink and indoor gym. At the event, 60 Minute Kids Club transformed our section of the gym to the ‘Coordination Station!’ Our aim was to highlight a wide variety of Fundamental Movement Skills and allow everyone an opportunity to challenge their skills in many unique ways. We had balls of various sizes, striking implements of all kinds, balloons, ropes, mats, and markers on the floor. With those, we handed out activity cards that related to skills such as hopping, jumping, galloping, balance, agility, coordination, object manipulation and much more.

Everyone had a great time seeing that, without a sport context, fundamental movement skills can be practiced and improved in many different ways. Once they find success in these skills, they can then apply to them whichever sports or activities they so choose – opening the door for them to truly be Active for Life in as many ways as possible.

We had a wonderful day with the hundreds of people that made it to the event and want to thank everyone – organizers, sport clubs, volunteers, and attendees – for joining together to spend a day playing, learning, and being active!
